In January 2023, Reliance Jio gained the most wireless and wireline subscribers in India while Vodafone and BSNL lost millions of wireless subscribers. Private players dominated the wireless market with 90.55% share. Overall teledensity was 84.52%, with Delhi having the highest and Bihar the lowest.


The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India released its data on telecom subscriptions. Reliance Jio emerged as the clear winner again. 

Reliance Jio remained the leader in the wireless segment and 1.7 million new subscribers, while Airtel remained second with 1.3 million new additions. Vodafone and BSNL lost about 1.4 million and 1.5 million wireless subscriptions. 

Reliance Jio's wireless market share stood at 37.28%, while Bharti Airtel's stood at 32.27%. Vodafone's share declined to 21%, while BSNL contracted by 9.21% of the total wireless market. 

Reliance Jio maintained its market leader position in the wireline segment and gained 2.2 Lakh new subscribers, while Airtel gained 1.2 Lakh. Vodafone and BSNL continued their losing spree by losing over 23k subscribers combined. 

With a market share of almost 26%, BSNL is the second-largest wireline player in the nation. Jio stood first with 31.08%, while Airtel was third with 24.89%. Vodafone's share stood at 2.57%, less than MTNL's.

Private telecom players held 90.55% of the wireless market, while PSUs left with less than a 10% share in the wireless market. 

In January 2023, about 12.4 million requests received for Mobile Number Portability. The majority of the requests turned out to be from North India. 

Overall teledensity (wireline+wireless) stood at 84.52% for January 2023, where Bihar had the lowest teledensity of 55.10% while Delhi had the highest with 272.94%.
