The death toll in the tragic BEST bus accident in Mumbai's Kurla West has risen to seven, with 42 others injured. The incident occurred on Monday night when a BEST bus, heading towards Andheri, lost control while traveling along SG Barve Marg. The bus crashed into pedestrians and vehicles over a stretch of 100 meters before finally hitting the RCC column of the Solomon Building, damaging the compound wall.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the bus was traveling at high speed after the driver, Sanjay More, lost control of the vehicle. The bus collided with nearly 30-40 vehicles, dragging some of them along the way. The bus then continued its path, entering a residential area, Buddha Colony, where it finally stopped.
The driver of the bus has been detained by the police for questioning. Initial reports from the police suggest that the bus was a 12-meter-long electric vehicle manufactured by Olectra Greentech, which was being leased by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking.
Three people were declared dead at the crash site and were taken to Bhabha Hospital. On Tuesday, the death toll increased to seven, with many others seriously injured. The authorities quickly responded to the scene, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Following the accident, SG Barve Marg, a major road connecting Kurla station, was closed to traffic. As a result, BEST buses are now operating from nearby locations instead of Kurla station. The police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
In response to the tragedy, Mumbai’s Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, assured that medical expenses for the injured would be covered by both BEST and the BMC. He also expressed his support for the families of the deceased and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
