Following the recent detention of 276 passengers on suspicion of human trafficking upon their arrival in Mumbai from France, Special Inspector General of Police, Deepak Pandey, has urged the Mumbai police to investigate this concerning angle. Pandey, responsible for preventing crimes against women and children in Maharashtra, directed the city police to look into the matter and requested detailed reports from CISF officials involved in interrogating the passengers within 24 hours.

While immigration and law enforcement authorities questioned the passengers upon arrival, Sahar police did not file a case as no complaint was lodged by immigration authorities. Pandey referenced a 2021 government resolution appointing the special IGP specifically to combat anti-human trafficking, emphasizing the importance of the investigation in line with this mandate. The incident unfolded on December 21 when a Legend Airlines’ A340 flight traveling from Fujairah, UAE, to Nicaragua, carrying 303 Indian passengers, made a stop for refueling at Vatry, France. Acting on a tip-off suggesting potential trafficking victims on board, French authorities launched an inquiry into the matter.
