Tesla, the electric vehicle (EV) giant led by Elon Musk, has begun hiring in India, signaling its intentions to enter the Indian market. This development comes shortly after a high-profile meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Elon Musk, and former U.S. President Donald Trump in the U.S. last week.

Tesla is currently recruiting for 13 different roles, which include both customer-facing positions and back-end roles, as listed on LinkedIn. Some of the positions include ‘Tesla Advisor,’ ‘Inside Sales Advisor,’ ‘Customer Support Specialist,’ and ‘Service Manager.’ The majority of these openings are in Mumbai and Delhi, with roles like customer engagement and delivery operations specialists being specifically for Mumbai.

Until now, Tesla had avoided entering India due to the high import duties on foreign vehicles. However, India recently reduced the customs duties on luxury cars priced above $40,000 from 110% to 70%, creating a more favorable environment for companies like Tesla.

While India’s EV market is still in its early stages compared to countries like China, where EV sales are booming, it presents a growing opportunity for Tesla, especially as the company faces slowing sales in other markets.

This move also reflects the increasing overlap between Musk’s business ventures and political discussions, as seen in similar talks involving Musk’s SpaceX and government deals in other countries.
