According to a UN report released on Wednesday, India is on its way to being the world's most populous country, surpassing China by around 3 million people by the middle of 2023.

The Indian population in 2023 crossing that of China is a historic crossroads for the two Asian neighbours and geopolitical adversaries.

According to the United Nations Population Fund's (UNFPA) "State of World Population Report, 2023," India's total population is 1.4286 billion, while China's is 1.4257 billion.

Based on past UN statistics, analysts projected that India would beat China this month, as per past UN statistics. However, the current report from the global agency did not give a timetable for the adjustment.

Andrea Wojnar, UNFPA's representative in India and Bhutan's country director, said that —India will face a situation of population momentum for the next 2-3 decades before the overall population decline.

Due to the epidemic, India has not undertaken a census since 2011 and has postponed its decadal census, scheduled for 2021. Conversely, Wojnar stated that the UN "updates and revises its estimates periodically" based on country statistical data on fertility, mortality, and migration.

According to recent UN data, the United States population in 2023 ranks third with an estimated population of 337 million, according to the statistics.

The Indian population in 2030 is expected to reach 1.515 billion. While India's population in 2050 is predicted to be 1.668 billion.
