On the occasion of Teachers' Day, there is a growing movement to grant educators the recognition they truly deserve by introducing a new honorific prefix, "Tr." This initiative seeks to elevate the status of teachers who have long been undervalued despite being the architects of knowledge and the foundation upon which other professions thrive.

Devish Gala, CEO of Navneet Education Ltd, is at the forefront of this effort, using the "Tr" prefix on business cards and personalized stationery kits intended for teachers in government schools. Gala has also reached out to state governments and the President's office, urging them to incorporate the "Tr" prefix in certificates awarded to outstanding teachers on September 5. The goal is to instill greater respect for teachers in society, with Gala highlighting that this idea has garnered international interest from schools in the UAE and Israel.

Renowned author and linguist Peggy Mohan supports this initiative, emphasizing that teachers have historically not received the respect commensurate with their crucial role. She views the introduction of the "Tr" prefix as a small yet meaningful step to rectify this imbalance and acknowledge the significance of educators. Mohan's own experience highlighted the difference in treatment she received when identified as "Dr. Mohan" at a hospital, underlining the need for teachers to be recognized appropriately.

Teachers and education professionals have also expressed their approval of the "Tr" prefix, noting that it will go a long way in boosting the morale of schoolteachers who often feel undervalued in comparison to professors in higher education. Avnita Bir, the director-principal of R N Podar School, pointed out that this honorific will create a sense of community among teachers who now work collaboratively to enhance education. Overall, the introduction of the "Tr" prefix is seen as a significant step forward in acknowledging the vital role played by teachers in shaping the future.
