UP Government Backs Power Privatization to Improve Rural Services
Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh has expressed strong support for privatizing power distribution in the state. He believes this step will improve electricity services, help farmers, and increase rural income.
Speaking at an energy seminar in Lucknow, Singh emphasized the importance of reliable electricity, especially in Dakshinchal and Purvanchal, two regions that have struggled with poor power supply.
Electricity Crucial for Agriculture and Rural Growth
Singh pointed out that 75% of UP’s land is used for farming, and that consistent power is key for irrigation and food production. Without stable electricity, farmers face big challenges, especially during peak seasons.
He said better power supply would not only help agriculture but also attract industries to rural areas, creating jobs and growing local economies.
Greater Noida Used as Example of Successful Reform
The Chief Secretary highlighted Greater Noida as a model for successful power reform. In that region, private companies handle power distribution, which has resulted in fewer losses, faster service, and better customer satisfaction.
He said other regions of the state could see the same benefits if private companies are allowed to manage the power supply efficiently.
Resistance from Employees, But Reforms Will Continue
Not everyone supports the move. Power sector employees have raised objections, fearing job losses and the effects of privatization. Some have even threatened to go on strike if the plan moves forward.
However, the UP government is determined to carry out the reforms. Officials say they are committed to protecting the rights of all employees, while still working to improve services for consumers.
Goal: 24x7 Quality Electricity Across the State
Narendra Bhushan, Principal Secretary of Energy, also spoke at the event. He said the state’s goal is to ensure affordable, reliable, and continuous power supply for everyone, no matter where they live.
Bhushan stressed that customer satisfaction, economic development, and energy security are at the heart of the government’s plan. He added that the privatization process will be carried out carefully, with protections for all stakeholders.
