Starting April 1, 2025, users of UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm may face issues if their bank accounts are linked to inactive mobile numbers. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced that banks will remove inactive mobile numbers from UPI-linked accounts. This means that if your number is no longer in use or has been reassigned to someone else, you may not be able to make UPI payments.
Why is this change happening?
The decision aims to reduce cyber fraud and technical issues in the banking system. When a mobile number linked to a UPI account becomes inactive, telecom companies may reassign it to a new user. If the previous bank details are still connected to the reassigned number, it increases the risk of unauthorized transactions or payment failures. This move will help prevent potential financial fraud and ensure that UPI remains secure for users.
Inactive numbers can also cause glitches in banking systems, leading to failed transactions or incorrect fund transfers. By removing such numbers, the NPCI wants to maintain the efficiency and security of UPI payments.
What Should You Do?
If you use UPI, follow these steps to avoid payment issues:
-
Check if Your Linked Number is Active
- If you haven’t used your registered mobile number for a long time, check with your telecom provider (like Jio, Airtel, Vi, or BSNL) to confirm its status.
- If the number has been deactivated or reassigned, update your bank account with a new number immediately.
-
Update Your Bank Records
- Visit your bank’s branch or use net banking to change your registered mobile number.
- Ensure the new number is linked to your UPI account to continue smooth transactions.
-
Stay Updated
- Banks and UPI apps will now update their records of inactive numbers weekly.
- If you face transaction failures after April 1, check if your mobile number is still registered with your bank.
This step by NPCI is a preventive measure to enhance security and protect users from fraud. To continue using UPI services without interruption, ensure that your registered mobile number is active and up to date before the deadline.
