A 16-year-old girl in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, has accused her school of denying her a sanitary pad when she got her period during an exam on Friday. The student, who is in Class 11, was reportedly asked to wait outside the exam hall for over an hour but was not given a pad. She was then sent home, bleeding through her clothes, after being denied permission to continue her exam.

The girl’s family has filed a formal complaint with the District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) and has also contacted the women and child welfare department and the state women’s commission, asking for action to be taken against the school.

The girl's father said that the principal and teachers ignored his daughter’s request for a pad. He said she had to leave school in a very upsetting condition, which left her feeling embarrassed and now too scared to return to school.

The acting principal, Rachna Arora, responded by saying that she was aware of the student’s request but was busy with other work. She said the student was told to wait but left before the principal could speak to her.

The DIOS has formed a team to look into the issue and check if the school had sanitary pads available. They are also working to make sure that all schools have enough pads for girls, and the government has been running programs to teach students about menstrual hygiene.

In September 2024, the Uttar Pradesh government started a program to provide sanitary pads to girls in government schools. This program is aimed at helping girls stay healthy and attend school regularly. The government has set aside ₹1.1 crore to help 36,772 girls in 535 schools. The school committees will be in charge of buying and giving out the pads to make sure all girls have access to them.

This incident shows the problems many girls face when it comes to menstrual hygiene in schools, especially in rural areas. It also shows the importance of making sure that government programs are properly carried out to help girls in need.
