Distressed telecom Vodafone Idea was once again on the losing end as it lost over 4 million subscribers in the month of September, more than twice the loss in August. As such, Vodafone Idea lost 11 million subscribers in FY23. 

Reliance Jio was the leading telecom once again as it added 0.72 million new subscribers while forever second Airtel added 0.41 million new subscribers. 

The total subscriber base of the three telecom giants stood as such:

  • Jio= 420 million
  • Airtel= 364 million
  • Vodafone Idea= 250 million

With these figures, Jio had the largest market share in the Indian telecom sector, holding a 36.6% market share. Airtel's standing improved as its share grew to 31.8% while that of Vodafone Idea declined to 21.75%.

Visitor Location Register, which is a key metric that reflects the number of active subscribers on a mobile network, indicated that 98.56% of the users were active for Airtel, 91.3% for Jio, and 85.17% for Vi.

However, the report also pointed out that India's total mobile phone user base marked a 3.7% decline on a monthly basis during September. This was evident by the massive decline in Vodafone Idea's subscriber base and the reduced addition rate of the other two telecoms. 

"The number of telephone subscribers in India decreased from 1,175.08 million at the end of August to 1,171.92 million at the end of September, thereby showing a monthly decline rate of 0.27 percent. Urban telephone subscriptions increased from 651.07 million at the end of August to 651.61 million at the end of September. However, the rural subscription also decreased from 524.01 million to 520.30 million during the same period,” the report from TRAI read.

During the month, the number of total broadband subscribers improved by 0.28% to 81.6 crores while the number of wireline subscribers increased to 26.47 million. In this segment, Jio was the market leader with a base of 7.65 million while BSNL came in second once again with a user base of 7.1 million after losing over 30k subscribers.
