Volvo Trucks has introduced India’s first ‘Road Train’ system, designed to make transporting goods more efficient and sustainable. The system, operated by Delhivery, aims to help the logistics sector move heavy cargo faster and at a lower cost.

What is a Road Train?

A road train is a large vehicle that pulls more than one trailer, allowing it to carry a lot more cargo at once. This new system is now allowed in India and can replace several trucks. It includes a truck in the front, called a "prime mover," which pulls two trailers, with a total cargo volume of 144 cubic meters – 50% more than normal semi-trailers.

Key Features of the Volvo Road Train

The Volvo FM 420 4X2 Road Train comes with advanced safety features, including:

  • Electronic Braking System (EBS)
  • Electronic Stability Programme (ESP)
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Self-steering axle on the trailer
  • Downhill cruise control
  • Load monitor on the dashboard

These features improve safety, stability, and control while driving long distances.

Government Support for Road Trains

The Indian government is supporting the use of road trains to improve the country’s logistics. Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, launched the Volvo ‘Road Train’ in Nagpur as part of the government's ‘Gati Shakti’ plan to enhance India’s transport infrastructure.
