Massive tremors were felt in Delhi today after two earthquakes in Nepal - one of magnitude 4.6 and the other of 6.2 - at a depth of 5 km.

The first earthquake hit Nepal at 2:25 p.m. before being hit by the second at 2:51 p.m.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said in a statement, "Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.2, Occurred on 03-10-2023, 14:51:04 IST, Lat: 29.39 & Long: 81.23, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Nepal."

Delhi and neighboring areas of the National Capital Region (NCR) suffered the effects of the earthquake. According to reports, earthquakes were also reported in the Uttar Pradesh cities of Lucknow, Hapur, and Amroha.

Videos of people leaving buildings as soon as the earthquakes were reported in the nation's capital filled social media. "A 6.2 M earthquake struck west Nepal. It's around 200 km southeast of Joshimath. This is at a shallow depth so strong tremors have been felt over north India. There are many faults in the Himalayan region. It's a very active region technically. We are checking which faults are involved," said JL Gautam, head of office, NCS.

The earthquake which lasted for more than 40 seconds, triggered panic with residents rushing out of their homes.

The Delhi Police posted on social media platform X, “Hey Delhi people! We hope you all are safe. Please come out of your buildings to a safe spot, but do not panic. DO NOT USE ELEVATORS! For any emergency help, dial 112”.

When they felt the powerful earthquake vibrations, which lasted for more than a minute, many people in north India, including Delhi-NCR, Punjab, and Haryana, hurried out of their buildings.

"On September 30, we recorded atmospheric fluctuations that included parts of and near Pakistan," Dutch researcher Frank Hoogerbeets, known for his earthquake forecasts based on celestial alignments, wrote on X. This is correct. It may be a precursor to a future, more intense tremor (like in Morocco). However, we cannot predict it with absolute precision.
