Safeer Mall Sharjah: The End of an Era
Sharjah’s beloved Safeer Mall, a shopping landmark for nearly two decades, has closed its doors. For many residents and expats, this isn't just the closure of a shopping center; it's the end of a significant chapter in Sharjah's history. This article explores the mall's legacy, its closure, and the future of the Al Khan Road location.
A Sharjah Institution
Opened in 2005, Safeer Mall initially operated as a discount center before evolving into a full-fledged shopping complex. Its affordable prices and wide variety of goods, from groceries and household items to clothing, made it a popular destination for daily shopping and family outings. More than just a place to shop, Safeer Mall hosted surprise entertainment, including dance performances and acrobatic acts, creating cherished memories for countless families. Its convenient location on Al Khan Road further cemented its status as a local landmark, a point of reference for both residents and visitors navigating the city.
Reasons for Closure and New Ownership
The mall's closure, after 19 years, is attributed to several factors, including increased traffic congestion, new toll systems impacting foot traffic, and a significant decrease in occupancy (over 60% vacancy in recent years). The Al Safeer Group of Companies officially handed the property back to its landlord on January 31, 2024. Western International Group, home to brands like Nesto and Mark & Save, has acquired the property. They plan a complete revamp and renaming of the mall, aiming to transform it into a modern shopping destination.
A Bittersweet Farewell
The closure evokes bittersweet nostalgia. For many long-term residents, Safeer Mall holds a special place in their hearts, representing a significant part of their lives in Sharjah. The removal of the mall's iconic blue signage marks a visible end, yet its impact on the community's collective memory remains strong. While some smaller shops continue to operate, negotiating their future with the new management, the overall closure signals a significant shift in Sharjah's retail landscape.
What's Next?
The future of the former Safeer Mall location remains uncertain as Western International Group prepares its revitalization. While details of the redevelopment are still under wraps, the new owners aim to create a contemporary shopping experience to cater to the evolving needs of Sharjah's residents. The transformation promises exciting possibilities, but it also concludes a significant era for Sharjah’s shopping history.
