After being away for a while, Shein is finally back in India. Remember when it got banned in 2020? Yeah, that hit a lot of fashion lovers hard. But now, it's making a fresh comeback, and this time it’s doing things a bit differently — teaming up with Reliance Retail to relaunch its brand. The Shein app is already live on Android and iOS, but for now, it’s only serving shoppers in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Don’t worry, though — a full India launch is on the cards soon.

Why Was Shein Banned in the First Place?

So back in 2020, Shein was one of the many Chinese apps that got banned in India due to concerns about data privacy and national security. It was a big deal because the app was super popular, especially among younger people who loved buying stylish clothes without spending too much. When Shein disappeared, it left this weird gap in the fashion space. A lot of folks turned to brands like H&M, Zara, and even some homegrown options to fill that void — but Shein definitely had its own vibe that people missed.

What’s Different This Time?

One of the biggest changes now is that Shein is not just coming back the old way. It’s actually making most of its stuff right here in India now. Yup, all the Shein-branded clothes are going to be designed and manufactured by Indian factories. That’s a pretty big shift and also lines up with the whole "Make in India" push by the government. The best part? The prices are still really low. You can find dresses starting from just ₹199, which honestly is kind of amazing if they keep the quality decent.

Reliance Is a Big Part of the Plan

Now here’s the interesting part — Reliance Retail is handling everything on the back end. That means the supply chain, data security, legal stuff — all of it is being managed by India’s biggest retail player. With Reliance involved, there’s definitely more trust around how Shein is operating now. Plus, this partnership could shake up the online fashion space in a big way, especially if they expand quickly and keep things affordable. Basically, Shein is bringing its global brand power, and Reliance is bringing the local expertise to make it work here.
