Uddhav Sena praises Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis in Saamna, marking a surprising turn in the state's political dynamics.

In a surprising development in Maharashtra's political landscape, the Shiv Sena (UBT)-linked newspaper, Saamna, has praised Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for a “good initiative” in Gadchiroli. Known for its sharp critiques of the BJP, Saamna described Fadnavis’s efforts to transform Gadchiroli from a Naxalite-affected district into a steel city as a commendable move.

An editorial titled “Abhinandan Devabhau” (Congratulations Devendra) lauded the Chief Minister's vision, stating, “If development and progress replace Naxalism, it is a welcome step.” This acknowledgment from the Sena (UBT) comes after a notable meeting between Uddhav Thackeray, the Sena (UBT) chief, and Fadnavis during the Winter Session of the Maharashtra Assembly.

The Context Behind the Praise

The praise for Fadnavis marks a significant shift, given Uddhav Thackeray’s previously bitter stance toward the BJP. Thackeray has frequently criticized the BJP for orchestrating the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government and splitting the Shiv Sena. The recent Assembly elections further dented Uddhav’s position, with Eknath Shinde's faction outpacing the Sena (UBT).

Despite these tensions, Saamna editor and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut clarified that the editorial was merely an acknowledgment of “good work” done by Fadnavis, who also serves as the Guardian Minister of Gadchiroli. He emphasized, “If Naxalites surrender and choose the Constitutional path, we welcome that.”

BJP’s Reaction: Cautious Optimism

The BJP, while appreciative of the recognition, downplayed its broader significance. Chandrakant Bawankule, the BJP state chief, remarked, “It is a case of better late than never. Fadnavis has taken many good decisions in the past that were ignored by Saamna.”

A senior BJP minister, speaking on condition of anonymity, termed these developments as “feel-good gestures.” He emphasized that while the editorial and the handshake between Fadnavis and Thackeray may not signify a major political shift, they reflect a possible thaw in relations.

Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Calculated Move

Internally, the Shiv Sena (UBT) is grappling with unrest among its cadre, especially after the poor performance in the recent Assembly elections. A party source revealed that there is growing demand within the ranks to revert to the core Hindutva agenda. This conciliatory gesture toward the BJP could be an attempt to address dissatisfaction within the party and project openness to dialogue.

Broader Implications: NCP’s Unity Talks

Interestingly, Saamna’s praise for Fadnavis coincides with calls for reconciliation within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Ajit Pawar’s mother, Asha Pawar, recently expressed her wish for unity within the Pawar family. Her sentiment was echoed by leaders from both Ajit Pawar’s and Sharad Pawar’s factions. Senior NCP leader Praful Patel went a step further, referring to Sharad Pawar as the party’s “revered leader.”

What Lies Ahead?

While these developments may seem like isolated gestures, they could indicate a subtle recalibration in Maharashtra’s political dynamics. The Shiv Sena (UBT)’s acknowledgment of Fadnavis’s efforts and the NCP’s discussions about unity suggest that the opposition parties are reassessing their strategies after electoral setbacks.

Whether these actions lead to a broader political realignment or remain symbolic remains to be seen. For now, the political maze of Maharashtra continues to intrigue.
