The political tensions in Delhi escalated as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs were denied entry into the Delhi Assembly. Former Chief Minister Atishi and other AAP leaders have accused the BJP of dictatorship and are staging a protest against the decision.
AAP MLAs Denied Entry to Delhi Assembly
On Thursday, AAP MLAs were stopped from entering the Delhi Assembly. Atishi, the Leader of Opposition, called it an undemocratic move and staged a dharna (sit-in protest) near the barricades. The police informed AAP leaders that they had been suspended from the assembly and could not enter the premises.
Atishi's Attack on BJP
Atishi strongly criticized the BJP, accusing them of silencing the opposition. She posted on Instagram, stating, "As soon as BJP came to power, they crossed all limits of dictatorship." According to her, AAP MLAs were suspended for three days just for raising slogans of 'Jai Bhim.' She emphasized that it was the first time in the history of the Delhi Assembly that elected representatives were not being allowed entry.
AAP’s official Twitter handle also posted about the incident, calling it "the murder of democracy and dictatorship." The party alleged that the BJP government was suppressing voices that raised concerns about governance and corruption.
Discussion on the CAG Report
The controversy intensified due to the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report, which was set to be discussed in the Delhi Assembly session. The report highlighted alleged corruption in the excise policy, which led to a heated political battle.
BJP leader Satish Upadhyay stated that the report revealed significant corruption and financial mismanagement by the AAP government. He claimed that over Rs 2,000 crore of public money was misused and that AAP leaders must be held accountable.
Congress Demands an Investigation
The Congress party has demanded an inquiry into the excise policy scam. State Congress President Devendra Yadav called the CAG report "loot, lies, and division." He pointed out that while the AAP government claimed that the excise policy increased revenue, the report showed a significant financial loss.
During a press conference, Congress leaders also raised concerns about the role of senior BJP leaders and the then Lieutenant Governor in the policy’s approval. They questioned how liquor shop licenses were granted in violation of the master plan and why there was no investigation into key decision-makers involved in implementing the policy.
Issues Raised by BJP MLAs in the Assembly
While the CAG report was a major topic, BJP MLAs raised other issues in the House:
-
Bhagat Singh Statue Issue: BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay raised concerns over damage to a statue of Bhagat Singh during the AAP government’s tenure.
-
Dirty Water in Mustafabad: MLA Mohan Singh spoke about the deteriorating water supply and damaged pipelines in his constituency.
-
Sewer Blockages in RK Puram: MLA Anil Sharma highlighted the issue of blocked sewers affecting several villages and colonies like Satya Niketan.
Future Course of Action
With the opposition MLAs missing from the House and AAP leaders protesting outside, the political turmoil in Delhi continues. The BJP insists on a thorough discussion on the corruption allegations, while AAP maintains that it is being unfairly targeted. Meanwhile, the Congress demands an expanded probe into the excise policy scam to include key BJP officials.
The coming days will determine whether an independent investigation is launched and how the Delhi Assembly navigates through this political storm.
