A Lucknow court has summoned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to appear on March 24 in connection with alleged defamatory remarks against the Indian Army. This case is based on comments he made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022. According to reports from news agency PTI, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Alok Verma has directed Gandhi to be present for the hearing.
Complaint Against Rahul Gandhi
The complaint was filed by lawyer Vivek Tiwari on behalf of Uday Shankar Srivastava, a former director of the Border Roads Organisation, who holds a rank equivalent to an army colonel. Tiwari alleged that Gandhi's remarks made on December 16, 2022, regarding a clash between the Indian and Chinese forces on December 9, 2022, were derogatory and tarnished the reputation of the Indian Army.
Legal Battle Over Defamation
This is not the only defamation case against Rahul Gandhi. On February 11, a special court heard another defamation case regarding an allegedly objectionable statement he made about Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the 2018 Karnataka assembly elections. The court has scheduled the next hearing for February 24, when a witness will be cross-examined. The complainant has also been asked to provide relevant evidence.
Rahul Gandhi’s Response and Court Proceedings
Over the last five years, multiple hearings have taken place in the defamation case, but Gandhi had not appeared in court. A warrant was issued, leading to his eventual appearance in December 2023. In February 2024, he complied with the court’s summons and was granted bail by the special magistrate.
Rahul Gandhi has denied all allegations, claiming that the cases filed against him are part of a political conspiracy. As the hearing on March 24 approaches, this legal battle continues to attract national attention, especially regarding the Indian Army and political defamation cases in India.
