YouTube is gearing up to tackle fake news ahead of India's general elections. The video platform wants to limit the spread of false information and provide high-quality news content.
"We have a clear responsibility to fight misinformation on our platform," said Ishan Chatterjee, YouTube's India Director. "Our policies enable us to take action against manipulated content that deceives users and may cause real-world harm."
But removing fake news is only part of the plan. YouTube also wants to promote content from reputable news publishers and independent journalists.
"News drives significant consumption on YouTube," Chatterjee explained. "We've seen huge growth in formats like Shorts and Connected TV."

YouTube's global head of responsibility Tim Katz noted India's "exceptionally high" demand for live news. He said usage spikes during major news events and elections.
To meet this demand, YouTube aims to support the entire news ecosystem - from broadcasters to print, digital, and independent creators.
A recent report showed video is the most popular news format in India. Half of Indian language internet users consume news. Seven in ten access hyperlocal stories.
Revenue from YouTube represents 70% of many media firms' total earnings. The platform is a vital source of income for their business models.
"Our goal is to provide quality news from trustworthy sources," said Chatterjee. "And stem the tide of misinformation this election season."
