The much-anticipated results of the Haryana municipal elections are set to be declared today, with vote counting beginning at 8 AM. This election marks a crucial political battle between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following last year’s assembly polls.
Polling was conducted on March 2 across 40 municipal bodies, where voters turned out to elect mayors and councillors. Additionally, by-elections were held for mayoral posts in Ambala and Sonipat, while Panipat's municipal elections took place separately on March 9.
Voter Turnout and Electoral Significance
Out of over 51 lakh eligible voters, 46% cast their votes, playing a decisive role in shaping the leadership of Haryana's urban governance. With both Congress and BJP eyeing dominance, the results will indicate shifting political dynamics in the state.
Municipal Corporations in Focus
The results will determine the mayors and ward councillors of seven major municipal corporations:
Gurugram
Manesar
Faridabad
Hisar
Rohtak
Karnal
Yamunanagar
Additionally, bypolls for mayoral positions in Ambala and Sonipat will also be announced today.
Elections for Municipal Councils and Committees
Elections were held for the president and ward members in four municipal councils:
Ambala Sadar
Pataudi Jatoli Mandi
Thanesar
Sirsa
Bypolls for the municipal council president in Sohna (Gurugram district) also took place. Meanwhile, elections were conducted for presidents and ward members in 21 municipal committees, with bypolls held in Assandh (Karnal district) and Ismailabad (Kurukshetra district).
Unopposed Winners Across Haryana
A total of 26 ward members secured victory without opposition, including:
Kuldeep Singh (Faridabad)
Vikas Yadav (Gurugram)
Sankalp Bhandari & Sanjeev Kumar Mehta (Karnal)
Bhavna (Yamunanagar)
Furthermore, three candidates in Ambala Sadar and Thanesar and 18 ward members in different municipal committees won unopposed.
Congress vs BJP: A Major Political Test
This election is the Congress’s first municipal poll contest in Haryana, making it a crucial challenge against the BJP, which won the 2023 Haryana assembly elections. The BJP fielded top state leaders to maintain its dominance, while Congress aimed to expand its influence in urban governance.
Unlike previous years, Congress has traditionally avoided contesting municipal polls on its official symbol, except for the mayoral elections in December 2020. This shift signals the party’s renewed focus on local governance.
