A Remarkable Political Career

Lal Krishna Advani has played a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of India. Born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi (now in Pakistan), Advani was introduced to politics at an early age. He became a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at just 14 years old. After the Partition in 1947, Advani and his family migrated to India, where he continued his political journey.

In 1951, Advani joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, founded by Syama Prasad Mookerjee. His influence within the party grew steadily, and in 1970, he became a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament. Two years later, Advani was elected as the president of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.

Advani’s political influence reached new heights during the 1975 Emergency, when both he and Atal Bihari Vajpayee were arrested for opposing the government. In 1977, when the Janata Party government took power, Advani was appointed as the Information and Broadcasting Minister.

In 1980, Advani played an instrumental role in founding the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which became a major political force in India. His leadership in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, which advocated for the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, significantly boosted the BJP’s popularity and electoral success.

Advani's leadership helped the BJP rise from a mere two seats in the 1984 general election to a dominant national party by the 1990s. He served as the Deputy Prime Minister of India under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee from 1999 to 2004, during which time he earned widespread respect for his political acumen.

Though no longer active in daily politics, Advani’s contributions to the BJP and Indian politics remain unmatched. He continues to be an influential figure in the country’s political history.

As the nation waits for updates on his health, supporters and political leaders across the spectrum have expressed their best wishes for his speedy recovery.
