Ng Chee Meng's Vision for Singapore's Workforce in 2025
At the 2025 May Day Rally, NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng unveiled ambitious plans to bolster Singapore's workforce amidst a challenging economic climate. Facing a downgraded economic growth forecast and rising unemployment, Ng's initiatives aim to equip workers with the skills needed to navigate global uncertainties.
A Strengthened Job Security Network
The centerpiece of Ng's announcement is a significant upgrade to the NTUC's Job Security Directorate. This revamped directorate will not only connect workers with suitable jobs but also actively assist businesses in transforming their operations. A particularly innovative element is the introduction of AI-powered virtual career coaching, providing personalized guidance on resume building, interview skills, and career planning. To further enhance skills development, the initiative is launching Cluster Company Training Committees (CTCs) to provide industry-specific training. An example of this is the partnership with ST Engineering Land Systems and SkillsFuture Singapore, already training over 1,000 workers from 40 smaller businesses.
Protecting Vulnerable Workers
Ng also highlighted the importance of protecting vulnerable workers. The new Platform Workers Act, ensuring CPF savings, injury coverage, and a stronger voice for gig workers like delivery riders, underscores this commitment. The continued success of the Progressive Wage Model, raising wages for 155,000 lower-paid workers by almost 6% since 2019, further demonstrates NTUC's dedication to narrowing the income gap.
A Call for Unity and Resilience
Ng's address resonated with a personal touch, reflecting on his 2020 election loss and emphasizing the power of teamwork. He stressed the crucial collaboration between NTUC, the government, businesses, and SkillsFuture Queen Bee companies in building a more resilient and productive workforce. His call for solidarity amongst union members emphasized NTUC's commitment to securing better jobs and a brighter future for all Singaporeans in these uncertain times.
Looking Ahead
Ng Chee Meng's announcements at the 2025 May Day Rally represent a proactive approach to safeguarding Singapore's workforce. The emphasis on proactive upskilling, innovative job placement strategies, and the protection of vulnerable workers showcases a commitment to building a future-ready and resilient workforce, capable of weathering upcoming economic storms.
