The Government of India has officially appointed Nidhi Tewari, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 2014 batch, as the Private Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She assumes this key role with immediate effect, as per the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).

Currently serving as Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Tewari will now take charge as Private Secretary at Level 12 of the pay matrix. Her appointment will be on a co-terminus basis or until further orders.

Who is Nidhi Tewari? A Bureaucrat from PM Modi’s Constituency

Nidhi Tewari hails from Mehmurganj, Varanasi, the Lok Sabha constituency of PM Modi since 2014. She cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2013, securing the 96th rank, and joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) in 2014. Before clearing the UPSC, she worked as an Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Tax) in Varanasi while preparing for the exam.

Career and Key Assignments

  • Ministry of External Affairs (MEA): Tewari initially served in the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division, where she gained expertise in international diplomacy and security affairs.

  • Prime Minister’s Office (PMO): She joined as Under Secretary in 2022 and was later promoted to Deputy Secretary in January 2023.

  • Key Roles in the PMO: She has played a crucial role in the Foreign and Security Affairs vertical, reporting directly to National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval. Her responsibilities have included handling matters related to External Affairs, Atomic Energy, and National Security.
