The passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 in Parliament has triggered a wave of opposition criticism, with leaders branding it as unconstitutional and divisive. The bill, which received the nod from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, has fueled political tensions, with opposition leaders accusing the ruling government of using it as a tool for political gains.
Fierce Opposition to Waqf Bill Passage
The bill was passed in Rajya Sabha late Thursday night, following its approval in Lok Sabha a day earlier. In the upper house, it secured 128 votes in favor and 95 against, while in the lower house, 288 MPs supported it, and 232 opposed.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who also serves as Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, openly criticized the government’s handling of the bill. Speaking to reporters, Kharge stated, "We presented our views, but the government chose to push its agenda forward with a negative stance."
Politics of Division Will Harm the Nation': Kapil Sibal
Veteran Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal warned about the long-term repercussions of what he termed “politics of division.” Highlighting the bill’s impact, he stated, "The opposition has put up substantial resistance, but the government enjoys a majority. This decision could have significant political consequences, especially with the upcoming Bihar elections."
Sibal emphasized that the bill's passage despite widespread opposition could damage national unity and create political instability.
Manoj Jha Compares Waqf Bill to Farm Laws
RJD leader Manoj Kumar Jha echoed similar concerns, comparing the Waqf Amendment Bill to the controversial farm laws, which were ultimately repealed following massive protests. Jha remarked, "There is deep dissatisfaction among the people. The opposition contributed meaningfully in Parliament, but if these concerns are ignored, the outcome could mirror the farm laws’ fiasco."
Political Implications and the Road Ahead
The passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 has undoubtedly set the stage for heightened political discourse. With upcoming elections, especially in key states like Bihar, opposition parties are expected to leverage this bill as a campaign issue. Meanwhile, the ruling government maintains that the bill is aimed at reforming Waqf properties and ensuring transparency.
