Rajya Sabha Sees Political Uproar Over 'Thokenge' Remark
On March 12, Rajya Sabha witnessed a heated exchange over a statement made by Leader of Opposition and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
Kharge’s "thokenge" remark, made during his speech on the three-language policy and the role of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, sparked strong opposition from the BJP.
đź’¬ Kharge’s Statement:
"I request you (Deputy Chairman) with folded hands to allow me (to speak)... 'aapko kya kya thokna hai thik se thokenge, sarkar ko bhi thokenge'....", he said while addressing the House.
🚨 BJP’s Reaction:
- BJP leaders criticized Kharge’s language, calling it disrespectful to the Chair.
- Union Health Minister JP Nadda demanded an apology and removal of the remarks from parliamentary records.
- Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh expressed disappointment over the comment, highlighting Kharge’s seniority in the House.
Kharge’s Clarification & Apology:
In response to the backlash, Kharge issued an apology, clarifying that his words were directed at the government’s policies, not the Deputy Chairman.
"I apologize to you (Deputy Chairman), but my words were against the government’s policies, not the Chair."
NEP Debate: Dharmendra Pradhan Defends Government Stance on Language Policy
Aside from the political storm over Kharge’s remarks, the Budget Session also witnessed a heated debate over the National Education Policy (NEP).
🏛️ Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan defended the government’s stance on language diversity and responded to allegations from the DMK and opposition parties that the Centre was trying to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu.
🔥 Pradhan’s Counterargument:
- Dismissed accusations that the government was using language to divide society.
- Stressed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi respects Tamil as one of the world's oldest languages.
- Highlighted his own Tamil Nadu roots, stating: "My mother is from Tamil Nadu. I am the son of a Tamil lady."
📢 Pradhan also emphasized: "The Tamil language is nobody’s monopoly. We are committed to the Tamil language. Truth is always painful."
