Pawan Kalyan, the Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Janasena Party chief, stirred controversy on Friday by calling out what he termed the “hypocrisy” of Tamil Nadu politicians regarding the Hindi language. Speaking at Janasena’s 12th foundation day event in Pithapuram, Kakinada, Kalyan questioned why Tamil leaders oppose Hindi yet allow their films to be dubbed in Hindi for financial gains.
"I do not understand why some criticize Sanskrit. Why do Tamil Nadu politicians oppose Hindi while allowing their movies to be dubbed in Hindi for financial gain? They want money from Bollywood but refuse to accept Hindi—what kind of logic is that?" Kalyan remarked during his speech.
His comments come amid Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin’s recent criticism of the Union government’s alleged ‘Hindi imposition’ and the state’s rejection of the three-language formula proposed under the National Education Policy (NEP).
Kalyan Advocates for Linguistic Diversity
Despite his criticism, Pawan Kalyan stressed the importance of India’s multilingual culture. He argued that the country should embrace all languages, including Tamil, rather than restricting itself to just two dominant ones.
"India needs multiple languages, including Tamil, not just two. We must embrace linguistic diversity—not only to maintain the integrity of our nation but also to foster love and unity among its people," he stated.
Chiranjeevi Extends Support to Pawan Kalyan
Following Pawan Kalyan’s statements, his elder brother and superstar Chiranjeevi voiced his support. He took to social media, expressing admiration for Kalyan’s leadership and speech at the Jana Sena Jayakethanam Sabha.
"My dear brother @PawanKalyan, I was mesmerized by your speech. Just like the vast sea of people who attended the gathering, my heart was overwhelmed with emotion. My faith has only grown stronger that a leader who can fulfill the people's aspirations has arrived. I bless you so that your victorious journey continues without obstacles, driven by the spirit of public welfare. Heartfelt best wishes to all the Jana Sainiks," Chiranjeevi tweeted.
The ‘Hindi Imposition’ Controversy in Tamil Nadu
Kalyan’s remarks align with the ongoing debate in Tamil Nadu regarding Hindi imposition. On March 13, CM MK Stalin slammed the National Education Policy (NEP), labeling it a “saffronized policy” that prioritizes Hindi over regional languages. He warned that the policy could damage Tamil Nadu’s education system and limit access to quality education for students in the state.
"The National Education Policy is not an education policy, it is a saffronized policy. It was not created to develop India but to develop Hindi. We are opposing it because it would destroy Tamil Nadu’s education system completely," Stalin stated in Tiruvallur.
He also accused the central government of withholding funds to pressure Tamil Nadu into adopting the policy.
"We are asking for our tax share, which we paid with our efforts. What is the problem with this? Is it fair to threaten us by withholding funds for 43 lakh schools just because we didn’t accept the NEP?" he questioned.
Stalin further argued that instead of promoting inclusivity, the NEP could widen the educational gap and negatively impact non-Hindi-speaking states.
"We would have welcomed the scheme if it brought everyone into education. But is NEP like that? NEP has all the factors that remove people from education. This is why we oppose it," he added.
