Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to take the oath of office for a third term on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in Indian politics as he becomes the first leader of the nation to hold three terms since Jawaharlal Nehru.

This momentous event occurred after Mr. Modi gave President Droupadi Murmu his resignation and the resignations of his cabinet earlier today at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi. Mr. Modi will remain in his position until the swearing-in ceremony, even though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) only managed to secure 240 seats in the most recent elections, 32 seats shy of the majority.

By defeating Ajay Rai of the Congress by fewer than 1.5 lakh votes, Mr. Modi, who kept his Lok Sabha seat in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, cemented his status as the temple's three-term member of parliament.

Mr. Modi presided over the Union Cabinet's last meeting under this government earlier today. Aiming for 370 seats (400+ with NDA partners), the BJP encountered strong resistance from the Congress-led INDIA coalition, which managed to gain 232 seats. Notwithstanding the defeat, the BJP managed to reclaim its top spot as the largest party, mostly because of its noteworthy victories in states such as Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar.

Notably, the BJP achieved a major victory in the southern state of Kerala by securing its maiden Lok Sabha seat. For the second time in a row, the party was unable to win any seats in Tamil Nadu.

Speaking to supporters at the party's Delhi headquarters, Mr. Modi thanked the Indian people for once again placing their faith in the NDA. In order to achieve the goals of the country, he promised to carry on the developmental work that has been started over the last ten years.

Mr. Modi made a calculated move by recognizing the critical roles played by Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar and Telugu Desam Party leader Chandrababu Naidu, both of whom are seen as kingmakers in the current political environment. The dynamics of the next term could shift significantly if the INDIA group is able to persuade these experienced MPs to team up.
