Today on the occasion of Muharram, PM Modi tweeted and recalled the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS). Further wrote that His courage and commitment to the ideals of justice and human dignity are noteworthy.
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and holds great significance to Muslims, especially Shias, on the 10th day of Muharram Imam Hussain Ibn Ali and his followers were killed in the battle of Karbala (known as Iraq in the present day) held in 680 CE.
Imam Hussain was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and the son of Hazrat Ali. Muharram commemorates his martyrdom and expresses sorrow for his death in the Battle of Karbala a couple of centuries ago.
This is a sacred month for the Muslims around the world to and India is no different.
Since Muharram follows the lunar calendar, its dates vary every year according to the Gregorian calendar. The crescent moon is usually sighted by Saudi Arabia, Oman, and UAE a day before India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Morocco, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.
Muslims today engage in prayers, visit mosques, observe facts, and express their gratitude towards Allah. Shia Muslims come and walk together on roads and streets to express their sorrow.
