Schools and colleges in Karnataka will remain closed on December 11 and 12 to honor the late former Chief Minister SM Krishna. The Karnataka government has also announced a public holiday for all government offices and aided educational institutions during this period.

The state is observing three days of mourning from December 10 to 12 to pay respects to the leader. As part of the mourning, the national flag will fly at half-mast across all government offices, and the state will hold no cultural or entertainment events during this time.

SM Krishna, who passed away on December 10 at the age of 92, was a transformative leader credited with putting Bengaluru on the global map as India’s Silicon Valley. He passed away at 2:45 AM and will be ashes with full state honors in Mandya, his hometown, on Wednesday.

Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, SM Krishna had a distinguished political career. Apart from serving as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, he held key positions such as Governor of Maharashtra and Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly. In recognition of his immense contributions, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, in 2023.

The announcement of holidays reflects the state’s deep respect and gratitude for the leader’s legacy. His contributions to Karnataka’s development and the nation’s IT sector will always be remembered.
