The atmosphere in Parliament turned volatile on Thursday during simultaneous protest marches by Opposition and NDA MPs. The tension led to a scuffle involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and several BJP MPs.
Rahul Gandhi's Allegations
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, accused BJP MPs of deliberately blocking his entry into the House. According to Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge faced similar obstruction at the Parliament gate during the protests. Addressing reporters, Gandhi stated:
"You might have this on camera. I was simply trying to enter through the Parliament entrance when BJP MPs attempted to block, push, and intimidate me. They even tried to push Kharge ji. But we are not deterred by jostling. This is the entrance to Parliament, and we have every right to go in. BJP MPs were obstructing us because the central issue here is their attack on the Constitution and the insult to Ambedkar ji's memory."
BJP's Counterclaims
The BJP countered Gandhi’s accusations, alleging he was the aggressor. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi stated:
"There was ample space for him to pass, yet Rahul Gandhi chose to push BJP’s Sambit Patra. This was completely unnecessary. The truth will come out once the CCTV footage is reviewed."
BJP MP Pratap Sarangi reportedly sustained a forehead injury in the scuffle and was taken to the hospital. Sarangi alleged that Gandhi had pushed him during the chaos. Adding to the criticism, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju remarked:
"Which law gives Rahul Gandhi the authority to push an MP? Parliament is not a place to display physical strength. Did you learn Karate for this?"
Underlying Tensions
The altercation has further strained relations between the BJP and Congress, who were already at odds over recent remarks by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Opposition leaders claim Shah's comments in the Rajya Sabha insulted BR Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, and have demanded his resignation. Meanwhile, the BJP accuses the Opposition of misrepresenting Shah’s words.
CCTV Footage to Reveal Facts
As the blame game continues, both sides have called for the release of CCTV footage to establish the truth behind the altercation.
