During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party (SP) stunned everyone by making a huge return in Uttar Pradesh and handily defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, is leading in 35 seats, while the SP, in coalition with the Congress under the INDIA bloc, is leading in 34 of the state's 80 legislative seats, according to the most recent data from the Election Commission.

In this election cycle, the Samajwadi Party, led by Akhilesh Yadav has shown itself to be a powerful force. After collaborating with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to win just five seats in the previous election, the party has now greatly boosted its total. The BJP, which had won 62 seats by itself in the 2019 elections, has suffered as a result of this comeback.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in Lucknow, and Samajwadi Party chairman Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav in Kannauj and Mainpuri are some of the prominent figures who won seats in their respective regions. Rahul Gandhi, a candidate for the Congress, and Kishori Lal Sharma, a candidate for the Congress, respectively, won their seats in Rae Babi and Amethi.

SP’s Strategy and Impact

The tactical leadership of Akhilesh Yadav has been essential in this election campaign. He vigorously oversaw the opposition's campaign, collaborating well with Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party and Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress. This election was the first general election held following the death of SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, and Akhilesh Yadav has led the party to an outcome similar to its triumph in 2004.

In the Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency, where he mobilized support for his wife Dimple Yadav and three cousins who were also running for office, Yadav's campaign had a particularly significant effect. Voters responded favorably to his forceful refutation of the BJP's allegations of nepotism, which compelled the ruling party to change its line of argument.

Challenging the BJP

The BJP, which was leading in 35 seats, along with its allies Rashtriya Lok Dal and Apna Dal in one seat each, was facing tough competition. Notably, Chandrashekhar of Azad Samaj Party (Kanshiram) won by a margin of 1,51,473 votes BJP's Om Kumar. In a significant setback for the BJP, Mayawati's BSP trailed in all 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Akhilesh Yadav’s efforts to consolidate opposition votes have borne fruit, compelling the BJP to address the issue of nepotism within its ranks. This was evident when BJP leaders and grassroots workers appended “Modi ka Parivaar” to their social media bios in response to Yadav’s jibe.

The INDIA Bloc’s Coordination

The SP had strategically given 18 seats to Congress, one to TMC, and fielded its own candidates in the remaining constituencies. This coordination within the INDIA bloc has been crucial in challenging the BJP’s dominance in Uttar Pradesh, a key battleground state.
