Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut made a bold claim on Monday, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced his retirement during a closed-door meeting at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur. According to Raut, discussions on Modi’s successor also took place, and he suggested that the next Prime Minister could be from Maharashtra.
What Did Sanjay Raut Say?
Raut pointed out that PM Modi had not visited the RSS headquarters in Nagpur for over a decade, making this visit highly significant. He further speculated that Modi might step down at the age of 75, which he will reach in September 2025.
BJP Leaders Deny Retirement Rumors
Reacting to Raut’s claim, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis dismissed the speculation, stating that there is “no need to search for a successor” as PM Modi will continue to lead the country. He also criticized the opposition for spreading baseless rumors.
Senior RSS leader Suresh ‘Bhaiyyaji’ Joshi, who was also in Nagpur, stated that he was unaware of any discussion regarding Modi’s retirement or replacement.
Does BJP Have a ‘Retirement at 75’ Rule?
In past elections, BJP had an unwritten policy of not giving tickets to candidates above 75. However, in May 2024, Home Minister Amit Shah clarified that there is no such rule in BJP’s constitution and that Modi would continue as PM until 2029.
Even Union Minister Rajnath Singh denied any such rule, stating, “It was never decided. There is no mention of a retirement age in BJP’s constitution.”
Will Amit Shah Succeed PM Modi?
Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Arvind Kejriwal had claimed that voting for Modi would mean voting for Amit Shah as PM, implying that Modi would step down at 75. However, Amit Shah rejected this, asserting that PM Modi will complete his full term.
Is There an Age Limit for the Prime Minister of India?
The Indian Constitution does not specify a retirement age for the Prime Minister. The only requirement is that a candidate must be at least 25 years old if elected to the Lok Sabha and 30 years old if elected to the Rajya Sabha.
As speculation around PM Modi’s political future continues, BJP leaders remain firm that he will stay in office until 2029. Whether this claim holds true remains to be seen.
