Anurag Thakur, Union Minister, says the subsidy for 10.35 crore Ujjwala beneficiaries now stands at Rs 400 per cylinder of LPG.

In a major relief measure ahead of the festive season, the Union Cabinet reduced prices of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for all 330 million users.

He stated “All domestic consumers of LPG cylinders to get Rs 200 subsidy per cylinder. Further, users under the PM Ujwala scheme will get this subsidy on top of the existing subsidy,

On August 29, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur briefed the Cabinet on the subject. As a Raksha Bandhan and Onam gift, the additional subsidy on LPG cylinders will be effective immediately.

In this way, Ujjwala beneficiaries now receive Rs 400 per LPG cylinder as a subsidy.

In addition, the government approved 7.5 million more Ujjwala connections, making the number of beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 103.5 million.

As per an article in Money Control, Thakur also mentioned that "The financial implication of additional subsidy of Rs 200 per LPG cylinder to be Rs 7,680 crore for 2023-24." 

There was no answer from Thakur as to whether the subsidy would be deposited into bank accounts or if there would be a flat discount on the price of the gas cylinder.

Furthermore, he said the government would also provide 75 lakh more Ujjwala gas connections for free.
