Ollie Pope had a difficult start to his first Test match as England's captain, as he lost the toss in the opening game at Emirates Old Trafford against Sri Lanka. Pope didn't let this setback discourage him from staying determined to take advantage of the conditions. On a pitch that Pope referred to as "rock-hard," Sri Lanka, captained by Dhananjaya de Silva, chose to bat first in the hopes that the conditions would hold for most of the game.

With confidence in his choice, De Silva observed that the ground appeared dry and that the weather had cleared up from the previous few days. He said he was willing to take advantage of the surface because it had worked well in the past. With a clear sky and a favorable weather forecast for the day, Sri Lanka was hoping to take advantage of the conditions and establish a solid base.

In place of usual captain Ben Stokes, who was ruled out because of a hamstring injury suffered during the Hundred event, Pope said that if given the option, he would have taken the first bowl. He made it clear that, despite the shift in voice, he would lead consistently and carry on in the preventive manner that Stokes had set. Pope acknowledged the impact Stokes has had on the group by saying, "It's still his squad." "The same messages from a different voice."

When the England selection was revealed more than 24 hours before tossing the ball, Matthew Potts was back in the starting lineup, replacing Stokes, making his first appearance since the summer's single Test match against Ireland. Dan Lawrence assumed the unaccustomed position at the top of the order, replacing the injured Zak Crawley, who broke a finger during the West Indies series.

Milan Rathnayake, a 28-year-old mate who was given his first Test cap, was confirmed to be a part of Sri Lanka's playing XI early on, according to de Silva. Both sides were ready for a close game when it got underway, with Sri Lanka hoping to take advantage of the favorable batting conditions and England hoping to get off to a quick start under Pope.
