India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, was upset with the team after a poor batting performance led to their defeat against Australia in the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. India lost by 184 runs, giving Australia a 2-1 lead in the series and ending India’s chances of making it to the World Test Championship final.
On the final day, India was in a good position at Tea with 121 runs for 3 wickets. Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal had kept Australia’s bowlers quiet in the second session. But things went wrong quickly after Tea. India lost seven wickets for just 34 runs and was all out for 155, falling far short of the 340-run target.
The collapse began when Pant tried an unnecessary big shot and was caught at the boundary. Jaiswal, who played well for his 84 runs, also got out soon after. The rest of the team, including captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, could not hold on.
Rohit looked good for a while but got out playing a loose shot. Kohli made just 5 runs. The team’s batting fell apart, and Australia’s bowlers dominated the final session.
In the dressing room, Gambhir reportedly told the players, “Enough is enough.” He was frustrated with their poor shot selection and repeated collapses. Gambhir, who became head coach after the T20 World Cup, has faced several setbacks, including India’s first ODI series loss in Sri Lanka in decades and a home whitewash by New Zealand.
Gambhir also warned players to focus on the team’s needs instead of playing their natural style if it doesn’t suit the situation. Reports say he is considering dropping players who don’t adapt.
India now has one more Test in the series to try and make a comeback, but the team must improve its batting and handle pressure better.
