Indian javelin adventure Neeraj Chopra's winning streak in the 2023 season came to an end at the Zurich Diamond League match on Thursday.
Chopra finished second with an adventure of 85.71 m, just 0.15 m short of Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch's winning mark of 85.86 m. Chopra's swish adventure is 89.94 measures, a public record.
The Letzigrund Stadium, the same venue where Chopra came the 2022 Diamond League champion last time, witnessed the Indian athlete begin with a modest 80.79 m.
After fouling his second and third throws, Chopra managed 85.22 m with his fourth attempt to climb up to alternate behind Vadlejch. He fouled again on his fifth attempt but entered the three-way sixth-round shootout with Vadlejch and Germany’s Julian Weber, the reigning European champion.
After a foul by Vadlejch, Chopra fumed in to throw 85.71 m, just 0.15 m short of Vadlejch’s leading mark. Weber came up with a solid 84.92. Chopra's marks at Zurich Diamond League 2023 were 80.79 m, no mark, no mark, 85.22 m, no mark, and 85.71 m.
Chopra, who had formerly sealed his place in the Diamond League Tests in Eugene in September, said," For me, the focus was just to stay healthy and to give my 100 percent in my coming competitions. Sometimes we need to read our bodies. moment, I feel OK; I am 100 percent OK, but I did not push too much. Sometimes, our No. 1 goal is to stay healthy. The moment I gave it my swish, but still with the focus to stay healthy."
Athletes are awarded points rather than orders for contending in each leg of the Diamond League series. At the completion of all legs, the best six competitors in each event will qualify for the Diamond League Final in Eugene.
