Inter Miami won 2-0 against Jamaica's Cavalier in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup round-of-16 on Thursday. Lionel Messi was not playing, with the club saying it was due to “load management,” and not because of an injury.
The game was tough for Miami, especially in the first half. Cavalier played well, creating chances and causing problems on the counter-attack. They almost scored in the 28th minute when Jalmaro Calvin’s shot missed the target. Then, Calvin hit the post after a deflection in the box.
Just before halftime, Cavalier thought they had scored when Shaquille Stein put the ball in the net. However, after a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside, and the score stayed 0-0.
In the second half, Miami played better and got their first goal in the 61st minute. Tadeo Allende scored after a scramble in front of the goal. Cavalier, who had worked hard in the first half, started to tire, and Miami took advantage. In the 83rd minute, Luis Suarez scored the second goal after a mistake from Cavalier's Shamar Watson.
The second leg of the match will take place in Kingston on March 13, and Miami will be hoping for another win to move on to the next round.
