Marcus Stoinis, the 35-year-old Australian all-rounder, has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. This decision means he will not be part of Australia’s squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy.
Stoinis's ODI Stats
Stoinis played 71 ODIs for Australia, scoring 1495 runs with an average of 26.69. His highest score was 146 not out against New Zealand in 2017. He also took 48 wickets in ODIs at an average of 43.12.
A New Chapter for Stoinis
Stoinis expressed his gratitude for his time in ODIs, saying it had been an incredible journey. While stepping away from ODIs, Stoinis will now focus on T20 cricket and remains available for that format. He thanked coach Andrew McDonald for his support throughout his career.
World Cup Hero
Stoinis played a key role in Australia’s 2023 World Cup victory, especially in a match against Pakistan. However, after the World Cup, Stoinis only played one more ODI and did not receive a Cricket Australia contract last year.
Praise from Coach Andrew McDonald
Australia’s coach Andrew McDonald praised Stoinis for his leadership and valuable role in the team. “He has been a natural leader and an incredibly popular player,” said McDonald.
Focus on T20 Cricket
Now, Stoinis will fully focus on T20 cricket. He recently played for Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20 league, though he suffered an injury in his second match. He also continues to play in Australia’s Big Bash League with the Melbourne Stars.
Changes for Australia’s Champions Trophy Squad
Stoinis’s retirement comes as Australia faces injury problems. Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out due to a back injury, and captain Pat Cummins is unlikely to play, along with Josh Hazlewood. These injuries will force Australia to make changes to their Champions Trophy squad.
