Carlisle United have officially named Mark Hughes as their new head coach, following the departure of Mike Williamson earlier this week. Hughes, a legendary former Wales international, has signed a rolling contract with the club, which is currently struggling at the bottom of League Two.
The 61-year-old coach will be joined by Glyn Hodges as his assistant. Hughes has been out of work since leaving Bradford City in October 2023. His managerial experience spans both club and international levels, having previously managed six Premier League teams and the Wales national team.
Hughes spent 18 months at Bradford, where he led the team to a sixth-place finish in League Two before losing in the play-offs—ironically, to Carlisle United. This was his only experience managing outside the top flight. In the Premier League, he coached Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR, Stoke City, and Southampton, overseeing 466 top-flight matches.
As a player, Hughes was a dominant centre-forward, winning 11 major trophies and earning 72 caps for Wales. Now, his biggest challenge will be steering Carlisle away from relegation and ensuring their survival in the English Football League.
