The 67th Caribbean Series kicked off on Friday in Mexicali, Mexico, at Estadio Nido de las Águilas. The first game saw the Dominican Republic’s Leones del Escogido, managed by Albert Pujols, defeat Venezuela’s Cardenales de Lara with a 2-0 score. The game was dominated by a strong pitching performance from the Leones, who combined for a shutout. Brooks Hall, who started the game, pitched five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out three. Ulises Joaquín, Alex Colomé, Joe Corbett, and Fernando Abad all contributed to the shutout, with Colomé getting the win and Abad earning the save in the ninth inning.
The game’s only runs came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Francisco Mejía, a former MLB catcher, hit an RBI triple to score José Marmolejos. Later in the inning, Mejía scored on a wild pitch, making the score 2-0. Cardenales pitcher Alex Scherff took the loss after giving up both runs.
In the second game of the day, Mexico’s Charros de Jalisco defeated Puerto Rico’s Indios de Mayagüez with a commanding 8-1 victory. Mexico showed strong batting and pitching throughout the game.
Now with a 1-0 record in the elimination stage of the tournament, the Leones del Escogido will face Japan Breeze on Saturday. This game will be historic as Japan makes its debut in the Caribbean Series. Meanwhile, the Cardenales de Lara, with Henry Blanco as their manager, will take on the Charros de Jalisco in the second game on Saturday.
