The Texas Longhorns baseball team kicked off their new season at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, against Louisville in the Shriners Children's College Showdown on Friday night. The highly anticipated game marked the debut of new head coach Jim Schlossnagle, who was hired in June 2024 after a successful tenure at Texas A&M. Unfortunately for the Longhorns, their season opener ended in a 4-3 loss to Louisville after 10 innings of intense action.
A Strong Start, But Louisville Comes Back
Texas started the game with promise. Freshman Adrian Rodriguez, who was making his first collegiate appearance, hit a solo home run in the 10th inning to give the Longhorns a 3-2 lead. However, Louisville quickly rallied back. The Cardinals tied the game in the 9th inning with a two-run single by pinch-hitter Garret Pike. In the 10th inning, a walk-off single by Lucas Moore, with runners on second and third, sealed the victory for Louisville.ice in his veins 🧊#HookEm | 💻: https://t.co/SAQq7hFBSV pic.twitter.com/ridxvxEGSl

Pitching Performance
Texas' starting pitcher, Jared Spencer, had an impressive outing in his Longhorns debut. The left-handed pitcher from Indiana State struck out six batters in 5.2 innings, allowing only four hits. Despite allowing some base runners, Spencer managed to keep Louisville scoreless through most of the game. However, the Texas bullpen, including Will Mercer and Andre Duplantier, couldn’t hold the lead, giving up key hits in the final innings.
Notable Debuts and Key Moments
- Adrian Rodriguez: Rodriguez hit a crucial home run in the 10th inning, marking his first collegiate hit and showing promise for the season ahead.
- Max Belyeu: The Big 12 Player of the Year from 2024 led off the season with a double and played a key role in Texas’ offense.
- Pitching Depth: Spencer and relievers Ruger Riojas and Will Mercer showed solid performances, but some late-game mistakes ultimately cost Texas the win.
Next Up for Texas
Despite the loss, the Longhorns will look to bounce back as they face Ole Miss on Saturday night. Ole Miss won their season opener against Arizona, and the matchup promises to be another exciting challenge for Texas.
The Longhorns, who went 36-24 last season, will look to improve and adjust under Schlossnagle's leadership. With fresh talent and a strong pitching staff, Texas is ready to build on its performance this season and contend for a top spot in college baseball.
Looking Ahead
Texas will continue to rely on key players like Max Belyeu, Adrian Rodriguez, and pitcher Jared Spencer as they seek to recover from the opening loss. Coach Schlossnagle, with his experience and success at Texas A&M, will undoubtedly guide the team through the ups and downs of the 2025 season.
