In a major surprise at the Australian Open 2025, 23-year-old Tristan Schoolkate, who had not even made his Grand Slam debut this time last year, will face world No.1 Jannik Sinner in the second round. The match, scheduled for Thursday night at Rod Laver Arena, is set to be one of the most exciting of the tournament.

Schoolkate has been impressive so far in the tournament. He recorded his first Grand Slam win in the first round, defeating Taro Daniel from Japan in a thrilling four-set match, 6-7(6) 7-6(4) 6-1 6-4. This victory came after his strong performance at the US Open, where he beat Daniel in a similar fashion. Now, Schoolkate faces the challenge of stopping Sinner’s Australian Open title defense. Sinner, who has won 30 of his last 31 matches, is in top form and looks unstoppable after a straight-set win in the first round against Chile's Nicolas Jarry.

Alex de Minaur, Destanee Aiava, and James McCabe Compete in Day 5

In other Australian Open action, Australian No.1 Alex de Minaur will also play on Thursday. De Minaur has been outstanding, winning his first-round match in straight sets against Dutch No.2 Botic van de Zandschulp. He will face American qualifier Tristan Boyer in the second round. Boyer has shown great resilience, winning a tough five-set match in his opening round.

Meanwhile, Australian player Destanee Aiava will take on 10th seed Danielle Collins. Aiava had a dramatic first-round victory, coming from behind to defeat Belgian Greet Minnen. She will be hoping to carry that momentum into her second-round match. On the men’s side, James McCabe will look to make up for his loss to Alex Michelsen last year at the Australian Open. McCabe, a wildcard entrant, is coming off a strong performance in the first round, where he secured his first-ever Grand Slam victory with a dominant straight-set win over Spain's Martin Landaluce.

Big Day for Aussie Wildcards

Thursday’s matches will be a big day for Australian wildcard players like Schoolkate, McCabe, and Aiava, who are all vying for a spot in the third round. Schoolkate’s clash with Sinner will be the headline match, with fans eager to see if the young Aussie can make history by defeating the world No.1. Meanwhile, de Minaur, Aiava, and McCabe will all hope to keep their Australian Open dreams alive as they compete on home soil.

The excitement is building on Day 5 of the tournament, with all eyes on these rising stars as they try to make their mark at one of the biggest events in tennis.
