Amazon has announced that it will discontinue its Appstore for Android devices on August 20, 2025. This means users will no longer be able to access or download apps from Amazon’s Appstore on their Android phones or tablets.
Why is Amazon Shutting Down Its Android Appstore?
Amazon stated that only a small number of users were using its Appstore on Android devices. Instead, the company wants to focus on improving the Appstore experience for its own devices, such as Fire TV and Fire Tablets, where most users engage with it.

A spokesperson from Amazon said,
"We've decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it."
What Happens to Existing Apps?
- Users who have apps installed from the Amazon Appstore on their Android devices may not receive updates after August 20, 2025.
- Apps will still be available and functional on Fire Tablets and Fire TVs.
Amazon Coins Program Also Discontinued
Amazon is also shutting down its Coins digital currency program, which allowed users to buy apps and make in-app purchases.
- Users can still spend their Amazon Coins until August 20, 2025.
- If coins remain unused, Amazon will issue refunds, with more details to be announced later.
A Look Back at Amazon’s Appstore
The Amazon Appstore was launched in March 2011 with around 4,000 apps. It was preloaded on Amazon Fire devices and was briefly available on Android and BlackBerry phones. However, it struggled to compete with Google Play and Apple’s App Store.
According to Statista, Amazon’s store remained a minor player in the app market, with most apps being free. In contrast, Google Play and Apple’s App Store dominate the industry, with Apple generating $25 billion in revenue from apps in Q2 2024 alone.
What Should Android Users Do?
If you were using the Amazon Appstore on Android, you’ll need to switch to Google Play Store or other alternatives for downloading apps in the future.
