State-owned telecom company BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) is set to roll out 5G services in the next three to four months. Currently, BSNL is focused on expanding its 4G network and aims to reach 1 lakh 4G sites by June 2025. So far, over 75,000 sites have been commissioned, and 80,000 sites have been deployed.

BSNL’s 5G Rollout Plan

Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that once all 1 lakh 4G sites are active, BSNL will begin its transition to 5G in June 2025.

How Will BSNL Upgrade to 5G?

  • Testing in Delhi: BSNL plans to first test 5G Standalone (SA) technology in Delhi.
  • Software Upgrade: With the help of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), BSNL’s existing 4G sites can be upgraded to 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) with a simple software update.
  • Expanding 4G Further: Even after reaching the 1 lakh site milestone, BSNL will continue expanding its 4G coverage across India.

India’s Only Indigenous 4G & 5G Network

BSNL is the only telecom operator in India using homegrown technology for its 4G and 5G networks. Unlike private telecom companies that rely on foreign vendors, BSNL’s rollout is part of the government’s push for self-reliance and security.

With this transition, BSNL aims to compete with private telecom giants and enhance connectivity across the country.
