Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 17 Pro Max, or possibly the iPhone 17 Ultra, in September. While reports suggest a new design and camera system, there's no confirmation yet on whether Apple will raise the price. However, looking at past trends can give us a clue about Apple’s pricing strategy.
Price History of iPhone Max Models
Apple introduced the "Max" version in 2018 with the iPhone XS Max, priced at $1,099. Since then, the pricing for the Max model has remained mostly stable:
- iPhone 11 Pro Max (2019): $1,099
- iPhone 12 Pro Max (2020): $1,099 (with base storage increased to 128GB)
- iPhone 13 Pro Max (2021): $1,099
- iPhone 14 Pro Max (2022): $1,099
- iPhone 15 Pro Max (2023): $1,199 (but with 256GB storage instead of 128GB)
- iPhone 16 Pro Max (2024): $1,199 (same as iPhone 15 Pro Max)
Although Apple technically raised the price in 2023, it also doubled the base storage, making it a balanced shift rather than a direct price hike.
Will the iPhone 17 Pro Max Be More Expensive?
For the last seven years, Apple has kept the starting price of the Max variant unchanged. However, there is speculation that the iPhone 17 Pro Max might be rebranded as the iPhone 17 Ultra, possibly signaling a higher price point.
Interestingly, Apple has even lowered prices in some regions. In India, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max launched at lower prices than their predecessors. This could be due to lower tariffs or Apple’s growing focus on expanding its market in India.
With Apple taking a more strategic approach to pricing, it remains to be seen whether the iPhone 17 Pro Max (or Ultra) will see a price hike or if Apple will maintain its current strategy.
