Katy Perry and Lauren Sánchez to Fly in Blue Origin's First All-Women Space Mission
Blue Origin is preparing to launch its first-ever all-female space crew aboard its New Shepard rocket on April 14, 2025. This mission, called NS-31, is more than just another space trip—it's a moment in history. Leading the crew is Lauren Sánchez, joined by pop star Katy Perry, TV host Gayle King, and other accomplished women from different fields.
A Star-Studded Crew Aiming for the Stars
The six women selected for this suborbital flight each represent leadership, innovation, and inspiration:
-
Lauren Sánchez – Pilot and mission leader, also known for her work in aviation and media.
-
Katy Perry – Global music icon who has always dreamed of going to space.
-
Gayle King – Longtime journalist and TV anchor.
-
Amanda Nguyen – Civil rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee.
-
Aisha Bowe – Aerospace engineer and entrepreneur.
-
Kerianne Flynn – Film producer and longtime supporter of Blue Origin.
The group was chosen to inspire future generations, especially young girls who dream of working in science, space, and tech.
What the Mission Involves
The flight will launch from Blue Origin’s site in West Texas and last around 11 minutes. During the journey, the crew will:
-
Reach 62 miles above Earth, crossing the Kármán line, the boundary of space.
-
Experience around 4 minutes of weightlessness.
-
Return safely to Earth with the help of parachutes.
Though short, the mission gives the passengers a real taste of spaceflight—without needing to orbit the Earth.
A Mission Full of Symbolism
This is the first all-women crewed spaceflight since 1963, when Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space. Lauren Sánchez shared that the mission isn’t just about flying; it's about representation and visibility. Katy Perry added that she had been waiting for this opportunity for nearly two decades.
Gayle King admitted she had fears about the flight but overcame them, saying the experience was too meaningful to pass up.
Blue Origin’s Push into Cultural Space Tourism
This launch is part of Blue Origin’s larger goal—not just to build rockets but to shape the culture of space travel. With competitors like SpaceX and Virgin Galactic, Blue Origin is showing how space tourism can also reflect values like diversity, inclusion, and female empowerment.
