Microsoft Updates Recall AI Tool to Help Users Find What They’ve Seen Before
Microsoft is giving its Recall AI tool a major upgrade for its upcoming Copilot+ PCs. The new version is designed to make it easier for users to go back and find things they’ve looked at on their screen — like a digital memory for your computer.
The Recall AI tool takes regular screenshots (called “snapshots”) of what’s happening on your PC. These images stay on your device and are only visible to you. With this tool, you can scroll through your recent computer activity and find emails, webpages, documents, or conversations you had earlier — even if you don’t remember the file name or website.
This feature is currently being tested by Windows Insiders, a group of early-access users who help test new updates before they roll out publicly.
How Recall AI Works
The updated Recall AI runs in the background and quietly takes snapshots of your screen every few seconds. These images are stored only on your device, not in the cloud. Microsoft says the images are searchable, thanks to AI, which reads the text and even understands visual details in the snapshots.
For example, if you saw a recipe on a website last week but forgot to bookmark it, you could search for "chicken pasta" in Recall AI, and it will pull up the screen where you saw that dish — even if you closed the browser tab days ago.
Focus on Privacy and User Control
Microsoft has made it clear that privacy is a top priority. All snapshots are saved locally on your device, and none of that data is shared with Microsoft or sent to the cloud.
You also have complete control over the tool:
-
You can pause or stop the recording any time.
-
You can delete specific snapshots.
-
You can block certain apps or websites from being recorded.
This gives users a powerful tool without giving up their privacy.
What’s New in This Update?
-
More Accurate Search: AI can now better understand images and text across apps and websites.
-
Improved Interface: The new timeline layout makes it easier to scroll back and find specific moments.
-
App Exclusions: You can now choose which apps are never tracked at all — helpful for banking or messaging apps.
-
Enhanced Privacy Controls: Microsoft added clearer settings to manage what’s saved and what’s not.
Why It Matters
Recall AI is part of Microsoft’s bigger push to bring more helpful AI tools into Windows. As people use multiple apps and tabs every day, it’s easy to forget where you saw something. This feature helps fix that by giving your PC a kind of searchable memory — like your personal digital assistant.
It’s especially useful for students, remote workers, researchers, and professionals who deal with large amounts of information.
When Can You Use It?
The updated Recall AI is currently being tested and is expected to launch soon with the new Copilot+ PCs, which come with advanced AI features built into Windows 11.
Microsoft says these devices will offer faster performance and smarter features right out of the box, powered by their next-generation AI systems.
