A recent poll has revealed that over 70% of PlayStation 5 fans want Sony to license out its older, unused game franchises to third-party developers. With many beloved series lying dormant, fans believe allowing external studios to work on them could bring these classics back to life.
Sony has already started experimenting with this approach. Games like Patapon and Everybody’s Golf have been handed over to other publishers and revived for modern platforms, including PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. This move has given hope to fans that other forgotten franchises might return.
In a recent Push Square poll with over 1,000 participants, 72% of respondents supported the idea of Sony licensing more of its older IPs. Many players are especially interested in seeing Japan Studio’s classics like Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice, and Tokyo Jungle make a comeback. These games had a strong cult following, and with the right publisher, they could find a new audience today.
Beyond Japan Studio, Sony has an extensive library of forgotten franchises that fans still love. Games like WipEout, The Getaway, MotorStorm, Twisted Metal, and Cool Boarders were once major PlayStation titles but have been inactive for years. Licensing these games to passionate developers could be the key to reviving them while allowing Sony to focus on its bigger projects.
While some players may feel hesitant about Sony handing over its legacy franchises to other companies, many agree that it’s better than letting them disappear forever. If done right, this strategy could bring back some of PlayStation’s most cherished games and introduce them to a new generation of players.
As Sony continues to explore ways to expand its gaming catalog, it will be interesting to see if more old PlayStation franchises make a return through licensing deals.
