Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, has officially launched its Starlink satellite internet service in Bhutan. Musk confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter), though the actual launch took place in December 2024. Starlink is expanding rapidly, and Bhutan is the latest country to get access to high-speed satellite internet.

Starlink Internet in Bhutan: What You Get

Starlink provides internet using satellites, which send signals to ground-based terminals. This setup allows people in remote areas to access the internet. However, Starlink does not offer direct satellite connectivity for mobile phones, unlike some special features available on iPhones in a few countries.

The Bhutanese government has set the pricing for Starlink plans:

  • Residential Lite Plan – Costs Nu 3,000 (₹3,001 approx) per month and offers speeds between 23 Mbps to 100 Mbps.
  • Standard Residential Plan – Costs Nu 4,200 (₹4,201 approx) per month and provides speeds between 25 Mbps to 110 Mbps, with unlimited data.

These prices are higher than what local telecom providers charge, which is common for satellite internet due to its high operational costs. However, for people in remote areas with limited connectivity, Starlink could be a game-changer.

Starlink’s Future Plans

Starlink is also looking to launch in India, but its availability depends on government regulations. The Indian telecom authority may require a spectrum auction before approving the service.

Although satellite internet is expensive, it can be very useful in regions with poor or no network coverage. For businesses and individuals in remote Bhutanese areas, Starlink could provide a reliable way to stay connected to the world.
