On Sunday night, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake shook Los Angeles, sending tremors across the San Fernando Valley. The earthquake struck at around 10:15 p.m., just hours after Hollywood’s biggest night, the Oscars ceremony. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter was 1.2 miles east-southeast of North Hollywood at a depth of nearly 10 miles.
Thousands Felt the Earthquake Across Los Angeles
According to the USGS “Did You Feel It?” survey, more than 8,000 people reported experiencing the shaking. Many residents across the greater Los Angeles area felt the tremors, including those in Studio City, Burbank, and even downtown Los Angeles.
One North Hollywood resident told KCAL/KCBS News, “It was so scary. I heard some noise, and after that, the ground was shaking very hard. But we kept drinking and enjoying our night.”

Newsrooms and CNN Studio Felt Strong Tremors
The earthquake was particularly noticeable inside CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS’ News studio in Studio City. CNN producers near the epicenter also reported feeling strong tremors. While the shaking startled many, there were no reports of major damage or injuries.
Los Angeles Fire Department’s Response
Following the earthquake, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) stated on X (formerly Twitter) that it would not be entering earthquake mode. This means no emergency actions were required, as the impact of the earthquake was not severe.
Why Do Earthquakes Occur in Los Angeles?
Los Angeles sits on multiple fault lines, including the San Andreas Fault, making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. Small earthquakes like the magnitude 3.9 tremor on Oscar night are common and serve as reminders for residents to stay prepared.
How to Stay Safe During an Earthquake
Although Sunday night’s earthquake was mild, it is crucial to be prepared for larger ones. Here are some key earthquake safety tips:
-
Drop, Cover, and Hold On – Get under a sturdy table and protect your head.
-
Stay Indoors – Avoid running outside during shaking.
-
Secure Heavy Objects – Prevent injuries by securing heavy furniture.
-
Have an Emergency Kit – Keep food, water, and medical supplies ready.
No Major Damage Reported
Despite the strong tremors felt in several parts of Los Angeles, no serious damage or injuries were reported. The earthquake serves as a reminder that the region remains seismically active, and residents should always be prepared for potential future quakes.
