In a significant development for the Indian aviation industry, low-cost carrier Akasa Air has received regulatory approval to begin international operations. According to reports in The Economic Times, the airline is now preparing to launch international flights, with a target start date of December and a focus on the Middle East region.

While international flights have been approved, Akasa Air is currently awaiting the allocation of traffic rights and subsequent approvals from the countries in which it plans to operate. These traffic rights are allocated based on government-to-government similar arrangements between governments and airlines, ensuring equitable air traffic distribution. Notably, major routes between India and the Middle East have been heavily utilized, resulting in limited slots for new entrants. Airlines are only permitted to operate a certain number of flights in accordance with their allotted rights.

Akasa Air's entry into international routes is seen as a significant milestone for the airline as it seeks to expand beyond India's borders. International routes are often considered more profitable due to lower competition, allowing airlines to maximize aircraft utilization on longer journeys.

Prior to being allowed to operate internationally, airlines were required to have at least five years of domestic operational experience and a fleet of 20 aircraft. However, India's civil aviation policy changed in 2016, removing the five-year experience requirement and allowing newer airlines to enter global markets.

Akasa Air's expansion into international operations aligns with the broader strategic shift in the Indian aviation industry. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, major players in the industry are keen to capitalize on the resurgence of global travel.

With plans to launch international flights in the coming months, Akasa Air is poised to provide more options to travelers while potentially disrupting the competitive landscape on Middle Eastern routes, marking a significant milestone in the airline's growth strategy.

Stay tuned for more information on Akasa Air's journey as it expands its wings into international skies.
